The Beauty of Yin Yoga & Sound Healing: Stimulating Our Pranic Flow

Yin yoga is one of my favorite styles of yoga and one style that I like to incorporate into my daily yoga practice at least 4-5 times per week. I love the slower pace of the yin style which really supports me in calming an active mind and coming into a more meditative space.

Yin yoga is a practice that is rooted in both Chinese philosophies and Taoist principles. These philosophies are based on the belief that there are pathways that run through the body known as Meridians, that allow for the free flow of energy or Qi.

Instead of targeting the muscles groups of the body as in a slow flow or vinyasa practice, yin yoga really taps into the tissues that lie below the muscle layer. These deeper connective tissues include the fascia, ligaments and joints. The ability for yin to target these deeper connective layers include holding poses for much longer than you would in a “traditional” yoga class. In a yin style practice poses are typically held for 3-5 minutes and some for much longer, which can create big physical sensations while also simultaneously relaxing, stretching, and lengthening the rarely used target tissues.

Sound healing is another beautiful practice that is incredibly powerful in its ability to bring the body, mind and spirit into a state of complete relaxation. Sound healing has been used for thousands of years to support individuals who are dealing with ailments such as pain, anxiety and depression. For most, a sound healing session will initiate a state of relaxation, peace and balance. The purpose of this practice is to set our intentions then allow the sound frequencies to clear areas of blocked or stagnant energy, while simultaneously relaxing down the nervous system.

Energetically speaking I believe the combination of yin and sound healing are so powerful because they are clearing energy through multiple pathways and systems within the body. The power of mindful movement in the form of yin works to clear blockages in the meridians, while the vibrational frequencies of sound healing work to clear energetic blockages in the chakra and/or endocrine systems.
