Supported Meditation: Mantras, Malas & Music

In the fast pace world we live in and with all the distractions that surround us, it can seem nearly impossible to find the time and space to sit still with ourselves in meditation. When first beginning a meditation practice it can seem incredibly overwhelming. We seem to have all these racing thoughts that we think make meditation nearly impossible… For many of us these thoughts include things like, “I have so much work to catch up on!” “What am I going to make for dinner tonight?” “What are my kids getting into in the next room?” Trust me, sometimes these thoughts can go on and on for the entire duration of our practice. But that’s not really the important part of cultivating a meditation practice. It’s more about having a practice that provides a life of grounding, balance and openness. It’s about nourishing a patience that allows you to acknowledge that the thoughts are there, release them and come back to an inner focus.
It is completely normal to have some difficulty with this practice in the beginning, like anything else the more time and effort we put into our practice the better we will become at it. After many hours of consistent meditative practice you will start to notice both a shift and a quieting of the mind. One of the things that I found helped me to cultivate my meditation practice was starting out with using guided or supported meditation. Supported meditation can come in many variations such as mantras, mala beads, and music.
Mantras and mala beads are always nice to use in combination with one another. You can roll each bead of the mala in your fingers while initiating each new start of the mantra you are chanting. Using the mala beads can support you by bringing the focus back to your intention or mantra when the mind starts to wander.
Music, more specifically healing frequencies is probably the tool that I utilize most when I am in need of support during my meditation practice. Due to the ability of the vibrational frequencies to calm not only the body but the mind, sound healing puts me in a very comforting state of relaxation.
